I lead the evaluation and guide care for patients with complex anxiety symptoms and disorders like Panic Disorder, Generalized Anxiety, OCD, PTSD, Phobias, and Trichotillomania, especially when the diagnosis is unclear or prior treatment has not been enough. As a tertiary care clinic, we see patients from across the country and around the world for second- and third-opinion consultations. These are typically one-time, 3 hour evaluations designed to provide a thorough diagnostic assessment and a fresh perspective. I work closely with a team of resident psychiatrists to clarify diagnosis, review what has and has not helped, and develop individualized treatment recommendations that patients can bring back to their home psychiatrists. Our goal is to provide thoughtful expert guidance when patients and families are looking for answers about what to do next.

I care for patients on the Johns Hopkins Motivated Behaviors Unit, an inpatient service for individuals living with both severe substance use disorders and serious mental illness, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depression. These intertwined conditions can create some of the highest-risk and most complex situations in psychiatry, especially when suicide risk is part of the picture, because both problems need to be understood and treated together. Our work is grounded in the Perspectives of Psychiatry approach, which sees each patient through four lenses: Behavioral, Disease, Dimensional, and Life Story. This framework helps us build a more complete understanding of each person's struggles and to provide thoughtful, individualized treatment during a critical period of care.

I serve as Associate Director of the Johns Hopkins Esketamine Treatment Clinic, where we provide advanced treatment for patients with severe depression, especially when traditional treatments have not been enough. I was involved in the clinical trials that helped secure FDA approval for esketamine and helped launch the Johns Hopkins clinic soon after it became available. This work allows me to offer patients access to one of the newest evidence-based treatments in psychiatry within the safety and structure of an academic medical center. Esketamine is also one of the few medications shown to be specifically effective for suicidal thoughts and behaviors, making it a meaningful option for some patients in urgent need of relief.
